Whether we camouflage them, or assume them more or less, the appearance of wrinkles is inevitable. They result from a progressive process of skin aging. So how do wrinkles form?

the epidermis (on the surface), the dermis (middle layer) and the hypodermis (deepest layer). From a certain age folds on the skin begin to appear, it is an alteration of the skin which appears due to the drop in production of collagen and elastin. These 2 proteins found in the dermis are in charge of “nourishing” the epidermis in order to maintain supple and firm skin. In case of loss of collagen and alestin, we speak of natural or intrinsic aging of the skin.

The first wrinkles are usually visible on the face, neck and décolleté. Indeed the skin is thinner and more fragile there, it is also where it is most exposed to the sun.

There are therefore 2 types of factors for the appearance of wrinkles:

Internal factors

We are talking about a low presence of collagen and elastin between the dermis and the epidermis, but also about a less efficient cell renewal due to the age of the person. On the other hand, in both women and men, the level of estrogen in the body plays a role in the development of wrinkles since a low level (especially in cases of menopause) means a decrease in the production of collagen protein. Finally, the excessive presence of free radicals (molecules obtained by a chemical reaction between oxygen and nitrogen) near our cells also alters the resistance of our skin: this phenomenon is called oxidative stress.

External factors

The sun, and in particular UV exposure (UVA, UVB, UVC) is the major factor in the premature appearance of wrinkles. Ultraviolet rays are responsible for the drop in elastin production, altering the dermis and the epidermis: the skin relaxes and does not regain its original shape. Admittedly, the sun provides vitamin D, but it also allows the creation of free radicals, the presence of which is harmful to other cells. Pollution is also an external factor with a real impact on the skin: the particles of pollution that your face receives daily reduce your immune system and therefore its ability to maintain its suppleness.

Leading a reasonable lifestyle, that is to say with a regular sports practice, a balanced diet, and a significant consumption of water will allow you to achieve the 3 pillars for healthy skin.

Admittedly, this will not make the first fine lines disappear, nor the expression wrinkles already installed, but avoiding overloading your body with external factors that accelerate skin aging is one of the effective tips we give you. Indeed, just like the sun in excess, alcohol, tobacco and coffee in excess are enemies of your skin; whether for skin aging or dull complexion, pimples, … It is well known that the body regenerates more quickly at night, so good sleep comes into play in muscle recovery and cell renewal, especially of your hypodermis , dermis and epidermis.

Against wrinkles and their appearance, hydration is the key. In general, the skin needs fat and water: when skin is dehydrated it needs water and moisturizing active ingredients, while dry skin needs a in vegetable oils or balms. Thanks to good hydration, the cells are filled with water and therefore restore their initial shape to your skin, that is to say plumped and plumped in addition to eliminating the feeling of tightness.

We can never repeat it enough, but putting on sunscreen daily is one of the best ways to delay the appearance of wrinkles. Knowing your sun capital and your phototype is another asset, because by knowing this information you can avoid overexposure to the sun and know which SPF index to choose (see SPF sunscreen article). In addition, the skins are not all equal in the face of the aggressions of the sun, for information: Asian skins are thicker and therefore less vulnerable than finer European skins.
